Whisky Wander Wednesday

NIKKA PURE MALT RED

This is a very clean blend of Japanese malts from Nikka's Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. At first we are greeted with the aroma of fresh red fruit and cherries that remind us of picking cherries in Canada's lush Okanagan. We bring the glass to our mouths and let this clean fruity liquid envelope our tongues....... "Now that's an easy drinking whisky." Raisins, raspberries, and a slight hint of walnuts make this very memorable. Now wait long enough and we get a grassy meadow taste. The complexity of this pure malt blend is outstanding.

FORTY CREEK BARREL SELLECT

The coming cold winter nights might be the best time to enjoy this award winning Canadian whisky. Immediate smells of rich caramel and honey fill the sinuses. The smells make me imagine walking among maple trees in the autumn, with leaves falling all around. Take a sip and enjoy the "Worthers Original for adults". Toffee, Caramel, and a light spice. The medium finish with notes of cinnamon and nutmeg leave us wanting more.

NOW THE VERTICAL TASTING OF THE TOMATIN SINGLE MALT SCOTCH 12, 15, AND 18 YEAR EXPRESSIONS

THE 12 YEAR

Finished in Spanish sherry casks, the aromas are complex with fruit and cooked malts. The flavour brings me back to the kitchen and grandmas cooking, specifically apple sauce. Cooked apples and pears make this whisky almost melt on our tongues. The finish is smooth with oak spice and thickens with a hint of pine nuts. It’s also clean without an alcohol burn.

THE 15 YEAR

Matured in traditional Scotch whisky oak casks, the aromas are light with citrus fruit. Think of sitting on a beach with the smell of fresh squeezed orange zest in the air. Fresh orange and a creamy vanilla fill the palette making us not want to swallow, but we have to. The finish is strong and full of honey with a hint of spice at the end.

THE 18 YEAR

Finished in Oloroso sherry casks, the aromas really culminate around a picturesque orchard, filled with ripe fruit and maple trees skirting the perimeter for that maple syrup smell. The flavours take us on a journey starting with spice followed by warm fruit and dark chocolate, then we come back to a spice again. The finish is long and sweet. Holding true to the Oloroso sherry casks this one is a definite rock star every step of the way.

Thank you for joining us on this wander. Have a great evning.
